Fake Off

Teams compete to recreate pop culture moments in 90-second stage routines.

Fake Off is an American reality competition television series on TruTV where groups of performers recreate and reimagine pop culture moments—like movies, events, or TV shows—in spectacular 90-second routines. The teams use stage disciplines including black light theatre, projection mapping, puppetry, and dance. The term "Faking" describes the act of recreating an iconic moment. The show debuted on October 27, 2014, and was produced by Shine America. TruTV renewed it for a second season, which was also its last. The knock-out competition was hosted by Robert Hoffman and judged by actor and dancer Harry Shum, Jr., pop star Rozonda Thomas, and renowned choreographer Michael Curry. Ten teams competed each week, with the lowest-scoring team eliminated, and the winner received $100,000 and the title of America's Best Fakers.

Background

In Season 1, ten teams were given a new pop-culture theme each week—such as action movies, reality television, the Moon landing, or the Olympic Games—and had one week to turn it into a 90-second Fake. The Fakes were scored by the three judges and the studio audience, and the team with the lowest score was eliminated. After eight episodes, one team won the title of America's Best Fakers and $100,000. For Season 2, the judges changed to Harry Shum Jr., Laurieann Gibson, and Beau Casper Smart, with Corbin Bleu as host and Meghan Camarena as backstage correspondent. Ten new teams competed: Academy of Villains, Astra Dance Theatre, ClownSnotBombs, CubeMetricks, The Deca Crew, JUNK, LUMA, On The Fly, The Surrealists, and Tribe of Fools. The winner was Academy of Villains, with CubeMetricks as runners-up, The Surrealists in third, and Tribe of Fools in fourth. Eliminated teams included Astra Dance Theatre, LUMA, ClownSnotBombs, The Deca Crew, JUNK, and On The Fly. The theme for Week 1 of Season 2 was "Movie Night."
