Production
The production operated without any government or law enforcement involvement. A disclaimer at the end of each episode clarifies that, while the investigative methods are genuine, certain procedures were recreated for television. Some leads the hunters followed—like a rental agreement from Enterprise and a vehicle’s whereabouts—were supplied by the production team upon request. Before filming, the participants allowed access to their personal records, homes, and phones; this data was then released to the hunters in stages, mimicking a real investigation. A strict separation was maintained between the hunter and fugitive teams. The production team carefully simulated real-world protocols, including waiting for a subpoena, and the hunters had to submit proper requests, which were occasionally denied. In the UK, Channel 4 acquired the series and retitled it Hunted USA to distinguish it from the existing British version.
