Format
The game was split into four rounds. Contestants began with a score of zero. When Ed Phillips asked a question, the first contestant to buzz in could answer; a correct answer added $5, while a wrong answer subtracted $5. Phillips revealed the answer immediately after a wrong response, and no other contestants could then answer. Contestants could buzz in before Phillips finished reading the question. Throughout the game, "Who Am I?" questions were asked: Phillips read clues about a famous person, with the final clue being the first name and last initial. The first contestant to buzz in could answer; a correct answer earned a "famous faces" selection, while a wrong answer lost no money and Phillips continued reading clues for others. Round One began with three questions, then a 20-second Sprint speed round, followed by the first Gift Shop offered to the leading player(s). If players were tied for the lead, Phillips conducted a Dutch auction. More questions and the first "Who Am I?" (the Fame Game) followed. After more questions and the second "Who Am I?", three more questions preceded another 20-second sprint round, ending round two.
Specials
Over the years, Temptation has aired several special editions. One was Quizmaster, which ran from late March to early April 2006 and brought together nine top winners from Temptation, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, and Sale of the Century to play for larger prizes. Other specials often included celebrities, athletes, and past champions. The setup changed depending on how many players took part, and sometimes celebrities competed as teams. Any winnings went either to a charity chosen by the celebrity or to random viewers at home.
Foreign versions
South Africa got its own version of Temptation on M-Net, with James Lennox and Bridget Masinga as hosts. It debuted on 25 September 2006 and ran every weeknight for six weeks. Contestants could become grand champions by winning six times. After the first series, the three top-scoring winners competed for a house in Johannesburg. M-Net also launched a Nigerian edition on 6 November 2006, airing weekly on Monday nights and hosted by Ikponmwosa "Ik" Osakioduwa and Kemi Adetiba. That first series had 26 episodes, and again, winning six times made someone a grand champion. Its Nielsen ratings never went above 0.5, making it the least-watched game show on broadcast TV that year.
