Cast and characters
Amber Marshall portrays Amy Fleming, the protagonist who practices natural horsemanship, a method used by her late mother Marion. After a car crash kills Marion and injures 15-year-old Amy, she lives with her grandfather Jack on the Heartland ranch. Her estranged father Tim returns, having been banished years earlier by Jack due to alcohol and drug use. Amy's older sister Lou leaves her New York City job to return home after Marion's death. Amy develops a close relationship with ranch hand Ty Borden, who works at Heartland as part of his probation. They fall in love, marry, and have a daughter named Lyndy Marion. In season 13, Amy and Ty become foster parents to Luke. Season 14 sees Amy coping with Ty's accidental death and being a single mother.
Michelle Morgan plays Samantha Louise "Lou" Fleming Morris. Lou returns home to help run Heartland, leaving her boyfriend and a lucrative business job in New York. She takes over the business side of the ranch and later proposes the Heartland Equestrian Connection as a corporate retreat center. Lou rekindles a romance with local vet Scott Cardinal, which dissolves in season 2. She then meets Peter Morris, marries him at the end of season 3, and they move to Dubai. They return to Heartland, have a daughter named Catherine Marion Minnie Fleming-Morris ("Katie"), and later adopt Georgina Crawley. In season 8, Peter's frequent work absences stress the marriage, and the couple separate. Lou becomes attracted to new stable hand Mitch.
Filming locations
Much of the series is filmed on location in and around High River, Alberta, with additional studio and location work in nearby Calgary. A June 2013 flood in High River swamped the standing set for Maggie's Diner, but the main Heartland sets escaped damage. Seventh season scripts were rewritten to move shooting locations for the fictional town of Hudson to Inglewood, a historic neighbourhood in downtown Calgary. Some interiors were filmed at Currie Barracks, an abandoned military base scheduled for redevelopment.
