Production

The series was directed by John Stroud, produced by Sioned Wiliam and BBC Television Head of Comedy Geoffrey Perkins, and executive produced by Denise O'Donohue for Hat Trick Productions. After the first series, Ben Chaplin left unexpectedly for a film role in Hollywood, and Neil Stuke replaced him for series 2 and 3. The change was indirectly acknowledged in Stuke's first episode when characters complained about a recasting on Roseanne. Andrew Davies and Bernadette Davis wrote the first two series; Davis wrote the final series alone. The theme tune, "Where I Find My Heaven" by the Gigolo Aunts, reached number 29 in the UK singles chart in May 1995. Other music featured included songs by The The, Therapy?, Manic Street Preachers, Blur, Super Furry Animals, Dubstar, and Oasis. A fourth series was considered; Bernadette Davis wanted to focus on Matthew's development and add a new gay or lesbian housemate, but despite a continuity announcer stating the series would return the following year, only one further repeated episode aired and no fourth series emerged.

Reception

The Digital Fix noted that viewing figures were highest during the first series with Ben Chaplin and declined sharply after his replacement. The British Comedy Guide described the series as polarizing due to politically incorrect dialogue and situations, but also noted high viewing figures and a growing following after cancellation. Game On was nominated for Best Comedy at the 1997 BAFTAs alongside Absolutely Fabulous and Father Ted; the category was won by Only Fools and Horses.
