Production
The series was produced by Four Star Television, of which David Niven and Charles Boyer were co-owners. The three lead actors often appeared separately due to scheduling conflicts, with Gig Young starring in the most episodes because Niven and Boyer were occupied with film projects; Niven had won an Academy Award for Best Actor in 1958. For the final two episodes, Larry Hagman was brought in to substitute for Young. The only episode featuring Niven and Boyer in roughly equal roles was "Bless You, G. Carter Huntington," which also included Young in a significant part. Niven appeared briefly in many episodes, often at the beginning, but led only three of the thirty episodes due to his film commitments; his scenes were frequently shot separately, especially later in the series. Gladys Cooper and Robert Coote provided continuity as Auntie Margaret St. Clair and Timmy St. Clair, appearing in most episodes. Four Star President David Charnay announced a feature film revival for 1968 starring Niven and Boyer, but it did not materialize. In 1989, Blake Edwards optioned the series for a revival, but ABC declined the unproduced pilot script in 1990. Repeats aired on Me-TV in 2011–2012 and again in September 2014, on Decades in March 2015, and on Talking Pictures TV in the United Kingdom starting in 2018.
