Production
James Whitmore stated in 2000 that the series arose from the American Civil Liberties Union and was conceived as a response to the McCarthy era, focusing on the right of people to disagree reasonably. He said he produced the show and called it a wonderful experience. ABC canceled the series after its first season, but thousands of angry letters from fans convinced the network to bring it back in 1962. Whitmore explained that the cancellation occurred because he refused to do commercials for Gleem Toothpaste as his character, and Procter and Gamble were the sponsors. He noted that the return was engineered by some newspaper guys and believed it was the only time that had happened with a TV show at that point.
