Production
The David Niven Show, a Four Star Productions series, was produced by Vincent Fennelly and aired on NBC Tuesday nights from 10 to 10:30 Eastern, taking over for The Californians. Don Quinn wrote Niven’s episode introductions, and Niven collaborated with Fennelly on script selection. Reruns aired from July 14, 1959, to September 15, 1959. Niven explained that he and the sponsor had agreed to the program expecting it to continue into fall 1959, but NBC later decided to use the time slot for weekly specials.
Critical response
Harriet Van Horne of the El Paso Herald-Post criticized the show, using Niven's role as an example of established actors who "use the medium a bit contemptuously." She noted his brief on-screen time and called the episode "Fortune's Folly" a cynical story she felt she had seen before. In contrast, Bill Fiset of the Oakland Tribune praised that same episode as "the finest in a long time," describing it as tightly written and well done with no tricks or gimmicks.
