Production

Hulu ordered a first season of twelve episodes for this series on January 9, 2018, with each installment planned for monthly release starting in October 2018. Though each episode was designed as a self-contained story, a connecting narrative or structural element was intended to link them. The series was officially named Into the Dark on May 2, 2018, with an October 5, 2018 premiere date. Producers Davis and Fisher were named, along with executive producer Alexa Faigen. A second season was ordered in August 2019, with Hulu adding nine more episodes to the fifteen already commissioned, for a total of twenty-four. Alexander Koehne and Lauren Downey took on roles as co-showrunners and executive producers. The twelve-episode second season launched on October 4, 2019, and was set to run until September 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the episodes planned for August and September 2020 were delayed; they had been filmed by November 2020 and eventually premiered in February and March 2021.

The series' first trailer dropped on September 13, 2018. A week later, on September 21, the show premiered at the LA Film Festival with a screening of "The Body" at the Writers Guild Theater. Sony Pictures Television secured the international distribution rights on October 11, 2018, and began shopping the series at the Mipcom market in Cannes the following week.
