Tiny Toons Looniversity

Twins Buster and Babs Bunny attend Acme Looniversity.

Last updated

Tiny Toons Looniversity is an animated sitcom from creators Erin Gibson and Nate Cash, airing on Cartoon Network and Max. This reboot of Tiny Toon Adventures reimagines the characters as college students. Amblin Television and Warner Bros. Animation produced its two ordered seasons.

Production

The series was announced on October 28, 2020, through the Amblin Entertainment website, with a two-season order. Steven Spielberg returned as executive producer, joined by Sam Register, Darryl Frank, and Justin Falvey; Erin Gibson served as showrunner and co-executive producer. The premiere was set for HBO Max and Cartoon Network on September 8, 2023. Concept art revealed redesigned Buster and Babs Bunny with different clothes and a new art style.

Tom Ascheim, then-president of Cartoon Network, stated the reboot would capture the clever and subversive humor of the original. Several original voice actors were not involved: Cree Summer was informed Elmyra Duff was excluded; Charlie Adler, John Kassir, and Maurice LaMarche were not approached for their roles. Summer later reprised her role when the full cast was announced in June 2023. Candi Milo returned as Granny but not as Sweetie Bird, which went to Tessa Netting.

Jeff Bergman confirmed his return as Bugs Bunny, Sylvester, and Foghorn Leghorn, describing Foghorn as Acme Looniversity's coach and Bugs as having a Dumbledore-like personality; recording sessions had begun.

Reception

The show received mixed reception. Jesse Hassenger of IGN gave it 6/10, praising its laughs and clever in-jokes but calling it an average revival rather than something as fresh as the original. Nick Valdez of ComicBook.com rated it 3.5/5, noting new life breathed into the franchise while retaining nostalgic allure, and cited the retcon of Buster and Babs as siblings instead of a couple.
