Fatal Attraction is an American erotic psychological thriller television series developed by Alexandra Cunningham and Kevin J. Hynes, based on the 1987 film of the same name. It aired on Paramount+ from April 30 to May 28, 2023, and was cancelled after one season in October 2023.
Production
A television series reboot was first announced in February 2021, when Paramount Pictures named Fatal Attraction among several films being developed for Paramount+. In November, the series received a series order, with Lizzy Caplan cast as Alex and Joshua Jackson cast as Dan in early 2022.
Silver Tree joined as director and executive producer in May, and additional cast members including Amanda Peet, Alyssa Jirrels, Toby Huss, Reno Wilson, and Brian Goodman were added in June. Filming began in mid–2022. Paramount+ cancelled the series on October 26, 2023.
Reception
On Rotten Tomatoes, the series holds a 37% approval rating with an average rating of 5.1/10 based on 51 critic reviews; the critics consensus states that while the series avoids being a mere copy by transposing the story into a modern era of sexual politics, clumsy execution dulls its edge. Metacritic assigned a score of 47 out of 100 based on 25 critics, indicating mixed or average reviews. The A.V. Club's Manuel Betancourt gave a C+ grade, noting the series filters the original through a self-reflective lens aware of its central setup.
James Jackson of The Times gave 2/5 stars, calling it a case of Fatal Protraction. John Anderson of The Wall Street Journal called it a first-rate reimagining that is more complex and adult than the 1987 original. TheWrap's Gwen Ihnat described it as captivating and binge-worthy despite clunky pacing stretched across eight episodes.
