Last updated
Public Morals is a 1960s-set American police drama created by Edward Burns, who also wrote, directed, executive-produced, and starred in it. The series follows New York City's Public Morals Division as its Irish American officers police vice while navigating their own personal lives. It aired on TNT from August 25 to October 20, 2015, with Amblin Television among the producers. TNT canceled the show after its first season on December 15, 2015.
Production
The idea for the show started when Edward Burns was filming Saving Private Ryan. Executive producer Steven Spielberg suggested he write a script based on his own father's time in the NYPD. Burns had already been working on scripts about Irish-American cops and gangsters in New York City.
Although Public Morals did not use those scripts directly, the research he did for them laid the groundwork for the series. TNT ordered ten episodes in May 2015. While making the show, Burns included nods to his favorite crime films, such as The Hustler, The Godfather, The French Connection, and Mean Streets.
