The Vegans established a base on the near side of the Moon and attacked Earth with flying saucers and giant robotic monsters. Duke Fleed, under the name Daisuke Umon, fought them with Grendizer, aided by Koji Kabuto and Hikaru Makiba. Later, Duke's younger sister Maria Grace Fleed was discovered alive on Earth, having been raised by a man named Dr. Umon (Duke's adoptive father). The conflict ended with the destruction of the Vegan mother ship, and King Vega was killed by Duke Fleed in the final episode, after which Duke and Maria returned to reconstruct planet Fleed.

The Story of Duke Fleed and the Vegan War

The narrative centers on Duke Fleed, sole surviving heir of the royal line from the peaceful planet Fleed, which was reduced to a radioactive wasteland after King Vega's armies invaded to secure a new homeworld. Vega's own planet had become uninhabitable from the over-extraction of Vegatron, a radioactive ore. Duke managed to steal Grendizer, the robotic form of Fleed's God of War, from the Vegan invaders and fled at faster-than-light speed, crash-landing on the slopes of Mount Fuji. There, scientist Doctor Umon took him in as a son under the name Daisuke, and he worked at Danbei Makiba's ranch. Two years later, Koji Kabuto returned to Japan in his self-built flying saucer, the TFO, and his clash with Daisuke over the approaching Vegan fleet forced Duke to reveal his true identity and pilot Grendizer. The Vegans established a lunar base, and the conflict escalated until Duke, Koji, Hikaru Makiba, and eventually Duke's lost sister Maria Grace Fleed joined forces. The war concluded with the destruction of the Vegan mothership and King Vega, after which Duke and Maria departed to rebuild Fleed.

Beyond its Japanese title, the series was known as Grandizer, UFO Robot Grendizer Raids, Goldrake, and Goldorak in different markets.
