Cast and characters
John Cena plays Chris Smith, also known as Peacemaker, a vigilante driven by extreme patriotism and a willingness to do anything for peace. Cena also takes on the role of an alternate version of the character from a different reality called Earth-2. Myles Benson appears as a younger Chris in a flashback scene. Danielle Brooks portrays Leota Adebayo, the daughter of former A.R.G.U.S. leader Amanda Waller and a member of the 11th Street Kids. Freddie Stroma plays Adrian Chase, the self-styled crimefighter Vigilante who sees Peacemaker as an older brother figure, and also appears as an Earth-2 version of Vigilante who belongs to the Sons of Liberty and views Peacemaker-2 as his greatest enemy. Kellen Boyle doubles for Stroma in scenes where both Vigilantes share the screen. Jennifer Holland plays Emilia Harcourt, a former A.R.G.U.S. agent on Team Peacemaker, and also an Earth-2 version who once dated Peacemaker-2. Steve Agee returns as John Economos, an A.R.G.U.S. agent who now reports to Rick Flag Sr. to keep tabs on Peacemaker. Frank Grillo plays Rick Flag Sr., the interim head of A.R.G.U.S. and father of the late Rick Flag Jr., who blames Peacemaker for his son's death. Flag Sr. has dark hair this season instead of the grey seen in Creature Commandos, explained in the story as a result of his vanity. Robert Patrick appears as Auggie Smith, the heroic Earth-2 variant known as Blue Dragon, and also plays the original Auggie in a flashback.
Production
James Gunn, creator and showrunner of the series, said in August 2021 that he wanted to make a second season and was committed to doing so if the series was renewed. He reiterated this after the first season premiered in January 2022, though he and John Cena did not yet have deals to return. Gunn did not formally agree to make a second season until he had worked out the overall character arcs. HBO Max officially announced the second season in February 2022, with Gunn set to write and direct all episodes. After the merger of Discovery, Inc. and WarnerMedia to become Warner Bros. Discovery, Gunn said in August 2022 that the season was safe and would begin filming in 2023. Gunn and Peter Safran were announced as co-CEOs of DC Studios in October 2022, and by January 2023 the second season was put on hold due to Gunn's new responsibilities. In February 2023, Gunn said the series was delayed by his work on Superman but was not canceled and would be made after the spin-off series Waller. Filming was expected to begin in 2023 but was put on hold when Gunn was made co-CEO and switched focus to Superman; the spin-off Waller was prioritized but later delayed by the 2023 Hollywood labor disputes. In March 2024, Gunn announced that the second season of Peacemaker would release first. Some filming occurred the next month, taking place simultaneously with Superman at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia. Principal photography for the season took place from June to November.
