Heroes Reborn (miniseries)

Heroes Reborn is a 13-episode American television miniseries that debuted on September 24, 2015, serving as a follow-up to the NBC superhero drama Heroes. Creator Tim Kring was back as executive producer. A 16-second teaser for the series aired during the 2015 Super Bowl. The story centers on a group of people with special abilities who are on the run from vigilantes, yet still need to step up and save the world. On January 13, 2016, it was confirmed that the show would not get a second season.

The official synopsis described the miniseries as reconnecting with the core elements of the first season, where ordinary people realize they have extraordinary powers. A six-chapter web series called *Dark Matters* was released on July 9, 2015, to set up the new characters and plotlines. The main story begins one year after a terrorist attack in Odessa, Texas. The government blames "evolved humans" (or "evos") for the attack, forcing them into hiding as vigilantes hunt them down. Two such vigilantes, Luke and Joanne Collins, are motivated by revenge for their son, who died in the Odessa bombing. Noah Bennet is also in hiding, but conspiracy theorist Quentin Frady tracks him down and tries to reveal the truth about the tragedy. Meanwhile, new characters discover their own abilities: Tommy tries to live a normal life in Illinois with his girlfriend Emily, constantly moving and changing his name to conceal his powers; in Tokyo, Miko searches for her missing father, a quest that may turn deadly; in Los Angeles, former soldier Carlos steps up as a new hero after his evo brother tried to protect people with powers; and Malina, an inexperienced teenager, is destined for something great. In the shadows, Erica Kravid, head of the tech company Renautas, acquires Primatech with sinister intentions. As more evos emerge, past heroes like Hiro Nakamura, Matt Parkman, Mohinder Suresh, the Haitian René, Angela Petrelli, Micah Sanders, and Molly Walker cross paths with the new generation. Together, they must prevent a geomagnetic reversal that would expose the planet to lethal solar radiation. Tim Kring noted that the series is not a direct continuation but takes place well after the original show, saying, "This is not the fifth season, this is actually the 10th season."

In Canada, the series aired simultaneously with the U.S. broadcast. In Australia, it started on September 30, 20

Lore & Background

The series takes place one year after a terrorist attack in Odessa, Texas. The government blames those with extraordinary abilities ('evolved humans', or 'evos'), who are forced into hiding when vigilantes systematically hunt and kill them. Two such killers, Luke and Joanne Collins, are seeking revenge for the son they lost at the Odessa bombing. Noah Bennet is also in hiding, but is found by conspiracy theorist Quentin Frady, who tries to show him the truth behind the Odessa tragedy. Meanwhile, new characters discover their own unique abilities: Tommy tries to live a normal life with his dream girlfriend, Emily; Miko in Tokyo looks for her missing father; Carlos, a former soldier, emerges in Los Angeles; and Malina, an innocent teenager, has a great destiny. Erica Kravid, head of the tech conglomerate Renautas, has acquired Primatech with dark goals. Some heroes of the past, including Hiro Nakamura, Matt Parkman, Mohinder Suresh, the Haitian René, Angela Petrelli, Micah Sanders, and Molly Walker, cross paths with the new evos. Together, they must save the world from a geomagnetic reversal that will leave the planet vulnerable to lethal solar radiation.

Reader's Guide

Heroes Reborn was conceived by Tim Kring as a 13-episode event series with a closed-ended quality, rather than a direct continuation of the original series. Kring stated, 'This is not the fifth season, this is actually the 10th season.' A six-chapter web series titled Dark Matters was released on July 9, 2015, to introduce the characters and story. During the 2015 Super Bowl, NBC aired a 16-second teaser promo. The series received mixed reviews: on Metacritic, an average score of 53 out of 100; on Rotten Tomatoes, 42% of 50 reviews were positive, with the consensus noting a focus on special effects and unearned melodrama at the expense of the original's narrative. Kring later expressed remorse that audiences may not have understood the series was always intended to end after 13 episodes. The series was not renewed for a second season. A video game tie-in, Gemini: Heroes Reborn, was released in January 2016 for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One to mixed reviews. Titan Comics published two limited series: Heroes: Vengeance and Heroes: Godsend.
