Maze Runner: The Death Cure
Final installment of the Maze Runner film series.
Last updated
Maze Runner: The Death Cure is the third film in the Maze Runner franchise, based on James Dashner's novels.[1][2] It grossed $288 million worldwide against a $62 million production budget.[3]
Making and release
In March 2015, T. S. Nowlin was confirmed to adapt the screenplay.[4] Principal photography wrapped on June 3, 2017.[5] The film was originally scheduled for February 17, 2017, but was delayed to January 12, 2018, then to February 9, 2018, before premiering on January 26, 2018.[6][7] Actor Dylan O'Brien was taken to a hospital on March 18, 2016, after being hurt during filming.[8]
Following the accident, production was postponed, and producers indicated they were "looking to" restart filming around mid-May.[8] Because O'Brien's injuries turned out to be more severe than initially believed, production was halted indefinitely on April 29, 2016.[9] Chris White served as the visual effects supervisor for the work done by Weta Digital.[10]
What the cited sources add
A Deadline Hollywood article reported that Fox domestic distribution chief Chris Aronson said he was "thrilled" with the opening weekend number.[11] The same article noted that Death Cure's social media reach was 174 million, below the sci-fi genre average of 268 million.[11] The film earned a B+ CinemaScore, the same as Scorch Trials, and drew 47% under-25 viewers, indicating an older audience than the previous film.[11] An E! article stated that co-star Giancarlo Esposito said O'Brien was "healing very well" after the accident.[1]
A Screen Rant article noted that The Death Cure was the last dystopian YA blockbuster left standing after the Divergent series finale was moved to smaller screens.[2]
