It reflects the Hacker's resourcefulness, turning an enemy's momentum against them. The mechanic is a physical manifestation of the station's unforgiving nature: one mistake can be fatal, but a perfectly timed action can turn the tide of any close-quarters encounter.

Parry & Riposte is a timing-based defensive action available when the player wields a melee weapon. To execute it, the player must press the attack button just as an enemy's melee strike is about to land. A successful parry will deflect the attack and briefly stagger the enemy, leaving them vulnerable. Immediately pressing the attack button again triggers the Riposte—a guaranteed, high-damage counterattack that often kills lesser enemies outright.

This mechanic is not a universal solution. It only works against melee attacks; projectiles and energy blasts cannot be parried. The timing window is tight, requiring practice to master. However, its value is immense.

It conserves ammunition, which is scarce on Citadel Station, and allows the player to control the pace of melee combat against groups of enemies. A skilled player can parry multiple attackers in sequence, turning a desperate fight into a controlled execution. Why it matters: In a game where resources are limited and enemies are relentless, Parry & Riposte offers a way to conserve health and ammo while dealing decisive damage. • The Parry & Riposte mechanic was not present in the original 1994 System Shock, being a new addition to the 2023 remake.
• Successfully parrying a melee attack from a cyborg or mutant will often interrupt their attack combo, preventing further damage.
