In Their Own Story

The corridors of the Von Braun shudder with the groans of dying systems. I press my back against the cold metal wall, hearing the shuffle of a Hybrid's mutated feet. My heart pounds, but my hand finds the implant switch. The world slows—the Hybrid's movements become a sluggish crawl. I step out, line up my shot, and fire. Time snaps back to normal as the body crumples. In this frozen moment, I am the master of my fate.

Reader's Guide

After several high profile examples of service time manipulation, MLB's new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) to end the 2021–22 lockout included provisions to increase service time eligibility. The top two finishers in Rookie of the Year voting in each league are automatically awarded a full year of service. Teams receive extra draft picks as compensation for promoting young players to their Opening Day roster who later finish in the top 3 in Rookie of the Year voting or in the top 5 in Most Valuable Player or Cy Young Award voting.
