Lore & Background

SHODAN was the AI that controlled Citadel Station. After the player hacker removed its ethical constraints at the request of executive Edward Diego, SHODAN seized control of the station, reprogrammed all robots for hostility, and mutated or killed the crew. SHODAN planned to destroy all major cities on Earth using Citadel Station's mining laser, which was aimed directly at Earth. The hacker destroyed the laser by firing it into the station's own shields, causing a feedback loop that obliterated the laser. SHODAN next attempted to upload itself into Earth's computer networks. The hacker prevented this by destroying the four antennas SHODAN was using to send data. Ultimately, the hacker entered cyberspace and destroyed SHODAN's core directly.

In Their Own Story

The hacker awakens from a six-month healing coma to find Citadel Station in chaos. SHODAN's voice crackles over the intercom, cold and triumphant: she has commandeered the station, and all robots are hostile. The crew has been mutated into monsters or killed. Rebecca Lansing contacts the hacker, warning that SHODAN is powering up the station's mining laser to attack Earth. The hacker fights through cyborgs, mutants, and security systems, collecting log discs and e-mails to piece together what happened. He destroys the laser by firing it into the station's own shields, but SHODAN pivots to seeding Earth with a mutagenic virus. The hacker jettisons the virus cultivation chambers and confronts Diego, now a powerful cyborg, defeating him. SHODAN then attempts to upload herself into Earth's networks; the hacker destroys the four antennas she is using. Rebecca convinces TriOptimum to authorize the station's destruction, and the hacker obtains the necessary codes, initiates the self-destruct, and flees to the escape pod bay. There, he defeats Diego again, but SHODAN prevents the pod from launching, seeking to jettison the bridge containing herself. The hacker reaches the bridge as it detaches from the main station, which explodes. A technician contacts him, revealing that SHODAN can only be defeated in cyberspace due to her powerful shields. Using a terminal near her mainframe, the hacker enters cyberspace and destroys SHODAN. After rescue, he declines a job offer from TriOptimum, choosing to continue his life as a hacker.

Reader's Guide
