The Empty Takes Dean

A hunter's soul returns from death through Jack's power, not the void.

In the vast cosmology of the Supernatural universe, souls typically face judgment for Heaven or Hell upon death. However, unclaimed souls drift into The Empty—a primordial void that existed before God's creation, where nothing exists but silence and hunger. While Castiel and Jack Kline are famously associated with this realm, Dean Winchester's soul never faced a near-fatal encounter with The Empty in Season 13.

Lore & Background

Unlike previous deaths where he was sent to Heaven or Hell, Dean's resurrection in Season 13 was performed by Jack Kline using his own growing powers, but Jack did not reach into The Empty or reclaim Dean's soul from it. Castiel did not attempt to resurrect Dean and lacked no authority in the matter; instead, Jack's resurrection was a direct act of his nascent abilities, not a bypass of the natural order involving The Empty. This event highlighted Jack's potential but did not establish The Empty as a threat to Dean specifically. Notably, Jack later traveled to The Empty in Season 14 to retrieve Castiel's soul, and Castiel himself was trapped there from the end of Season 13 until Season 15, a significant period.

Reader's Guide

The arc begins with Dean struggling against the Mark of Cain's escalating corruption in Season 13. The physical toll eventually leads to a fatal collapse where his soul departs his body without a clear destination. Castiel discovers that Dean is truly dead and attempts a resurrection, but finds the natural channels blocked. He realizes Dean's soul is vulnerable to being lost forever in The Empty. Chuck Shurley intervenes directly, revealing he can override cosmic laws. He resurrects Dean, effectively saving him from the void and resetting his mortality for a final season of hunting.
