The McLaren P1, known internally as the P12, is a flagship sports car from the British manufacturer McLaren Automotive. The P1 uses a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, boosted at 1.4 bar to produce 542 kW (727 hp) at 7,500 rpm and 531 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. It is paired with an in-house electric motor generating 132 kW (177 hp) and 192 lb-ft of torque. The combined output is 674 kW (903 hp) and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft). The electric motor can be engaged manually or left in automatic mode, where the car’s ECUs “torque fill” gaps in the petrol engine’s output, effectively eliminating turbo lag and creating a powerband of nearly 7,000 rpm. The car is rear mid-engine, rear-wheel drive, and uses a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission from Graziano Trasmissioni.

Power for the electric motor comes from a 324-cell lithium-ion battery pack behind the cabin, developed by Johnson Matthey Battery Systems. It can be charged by the engine or via a plug, reaching full charge in two hours. The P1 can run on petrol, electric power, or both. Its all-electric range is at least 10 km (6.2 miles) on the European cycle, and 19 miles (31 km) on the EPA cycle. In EV mode, petrol consumption is 4.8 gallons per 100 miles, so the EPA rates the all-electric range as zero. Total range is 330 miles (531 km). Combined fuel economy in EV mode is 18 MPGe, with energy consumption of 25 kWh per 100 miles and petrol consumption of 4.8 gallons per 100 miles. Running only on petrol, combined economy is 17 mpg-US (14 L/100 km), with 16 mpg-US city and 20 mpg-US highway.

The P1 incorporates Formula 1-derived features: the Instant Power Assist System (IPAS) for an instant acceleration boost via the electric motor, a Drag Reduction System (DRS) that operates the rear wing to increase straight-line speed, and a KERS system. Both IPAS and DRS are controlled by two buttons.
