James "Jim" Hopper Jr., nicknamed "Hop," is the chief of the Hawkins Police Department. A Vietnam veteran who served in the Chemical Corps, Hopper is an alcoholic and chainsmoking cop haunted by the death of his young daughter Sara from cancer, which led to his divorce from his wife Diane and a period as a homicide detective in New York City. Initially reclusive and lonely, he gradually becomes more responsible, saving Will Byers and taking Eleven in as his adopted daughter. Throughout the first three seasons, he investigates the strange occurrences in Hawkins, eventually starting a relationship with Joyce Byers.

Hopper's life was shattered by the death of his daughter Sara, which he believes was caused by his exposure to Agent Orange during his service in the Chemical Corps in Vietnam. This loss drove him to alcohol and drug addiction and ended his marriage. After working as a homicide detective in New York City, he returned to Hawkins. In Season 1, he is approached by former classmate Joyce Byers about her missing son Will. Despite initial reluctance, Hopper realizes a vast conspiracy at Hawkins Lab and becomes instrumental in finding and saving Will. After Eleven's apparent death, he leaves food including Eggos in the snowy woods. In Season 2, Eleven is revealed to have survived and is hidden in Hopper's cabin; he forbids her from leaving or contacting anyone. Their relationship is strained by isolation, but he ultimately takes her to close the gate and strikes a deal to officially adopt her.
