This loss drove him to alcohol and drug addiction and ended his marriage. After working as a homicide detective in New York City, he returned to Hawkins. In Season 1, he is approached by former classmate Joyce Byers about her missing son Will. Despite initial reluctance, Hopper realizes a vast conspiracy at Hawkins Lab and becomes instrumental in finding and saving Will. After Eleven's apparent death, he leaves food including Eggos in the snowy woods. In Season 2, Eleven is revealed to have survived and is hidden in Hopper's cabin; he forbids her from leaving or contacting anyone. Their relationship is strained by isolation, but he ultimately takes her to close the gate and strikes a deal to officially adopt her.

In Season 3, Hopper is dismayed that Eleven and Mike have been dating for seven months, spending all their time alone kissing. When he tries to give a prepared "heart-to-heart" speech about his feelings, it backfires and he resorts to verbally threatening Mike to stay away. His talks with Joyce lead him to ask her on a dinner date, but she misses it to investigate her refrigerator magnets with Scott Clarke, making Hopper jealous. Together, they investigate Russian activity in Hawkins, taking scientist Alexei as a hostage and learning about a Russian base under Starcourt Mall. At the Independence Day fair, Grigori kills Alexei and chases Hopper. Hopper, Joyce, and Murray descend to the Russian base to close the gate. Joyce asks Hopper out on a date. Hopper fights Grigori, throws him into the equipment, and is unable to leave the room. He gives Joyce a nod, and she tearfully deactivates the machine, causing an explosion that appears to disintegrate Hopper. Three months later, Joyce gives Eleven the heart-to-heart speech Hopper had written. In Season 4, Hopper is revealed to have survived, captured by Russians and sent to a prison camp in Kamchatka. He befriends guard Dmitri Antonov, sends Joyce a note, and after a brief escape and recapture, is nearly fed to a Demogorgon. He uses a lighter and vodka to create a flaming spear to hold it back. Joyce and Murray infiltrate the prison and reunite with Hopper, who finally admits his romantic feelings for Joyce. They kill other Upside Down creatures to weaken the hive mind, and two days later Hopper reunites with Eleven in Hawkins as the Upside Down begins invading the town. In Season 5, Hopper goes on "crawls" in search of Vecna in the Upside Down. Eighteen months later in spring 1989, he proposes to Joyce and suggests they relocate to Montauk, New York.
