When animals in Hawkins begin turning up dead—including Claudia Yount's cat Prancer—Bob teams up with Joyce Maldonado and James Hopper Jr. to investigate the killings. Their investigation leads them to suspect Victor Creel of the murders of his wife Virginia and daughter Alice, based on their assumptions about the animal killings. Bob is present at Hawkins High School during the performance of Dark of the Moon, where the climax of the play's events unfolds.
