Eddie Munson is introduced in the fourth season as the leader of the Hellfire Club, a Dungeons & Dragons club at Hawkins High School. He is a senior and a social outcast, often at odds with the school's popular crowd, particularly Jason Carver and the basketball team. Eddie's uncle, Wayne Munson, is his primary guardian. When a series of gruesome murders occur in Hawkins, Eddie becomes the prime suspect due to his unconventional appearance and the town's prejudice.

He is forced to go on the run, hiding from both the police and vigilante townspeople. Dustin Henderson, Mike Wheeler, Lucas Sinclair, and Max Mayfield believe in his innocence and help him hide. Eddie reveals that he witnessed Chrissy Cunningham's death in his trailer, describing a floating, invisible force that broke her bones. This aligns with the group's knowledge of Vecna, a powerful entity from the Upside Down.

Eddie's knowledge of fantasy and horror tropes, honed through D&D, allows him to quickly grasp the nature of the threat. In the season's climax, Eddie, Dustin, Steve Harrington, Nancy Wheeler, and Robin Buckley enter the Upside Down to attack Vecna. Eddie's role is to create a distraction by playing his electric guitar, 'Bumblebee,' a Fender Stratocaster, on the roof of the Upside Down version of the Creel House.

His performance attracts a swarm of Demobats, allowing the others to infiltrate Vecna's lair. Eddie is overwhelmed and killed by the Demobats, sacrificing himself to protect his friends.
