Lore & Background
Sniper Elite 4 is a tactical shooter with stealth elements, played from a third-person perspective. The game features an X-Ray kill cam that activates on long-distance sniper kills, showing the bullet's path and damage to bones and organs; this system also applies to shrapnel, melee, and stealth kills. The artificial intelligence is improved, with enemies reacting more responsively and actively searching for missing comrades. Players can tag enemies and objects using binoculars, and the game introduces an 'officers' rank: killing the officer early causes his army to retreat, while killing him late increases difficulty. Traps and booby-trapped corpses are available, and night missions allow players to remove light sources to hide.
Reader's Guide
Sniper Elite 4 is significant for expanding the scale of its predecessor: the smallest map is three times the size of the largest map in Sniper Elite III, with greater verticality and a new movement system allowing climbing and ledge grabbing. The game's plot follows SOE sniper Karl Fairburne in Italy after the sinking of a freighter by a Nazi radio-guided anti-ship missile. The story involves alliances with Partisans and the Sicilian Mafia, and culminates in an attempt to prevent a missile attack on General Eisenhower's fleet. Reception was generally favorable, with critics praising sniping mechanics, map size, and level design, while noting a weak plot and forgettable characters. Some reviewers criticized the AI for tunnel vision and inconsistent pathfinding, and secondary weapons were often described as unsatisfying. The game was ranked 40th by Eurogamer and 22nd by GamesRadar+ in their respective lists of the best games of 2017.

Tactical Gameplay & the X-Ray Kill Cam
Sniper Elite 4 is a third-person tactical shooter built around stealth, and its signature feature is the X-Ray kill cam. When a player fires a long-range shot, the camera tracks the bullet to its target, showing in graphic detail how bone, muscle, and internal organs rupture under impact. The system was expanded beyond rifle kills to include shrapnel explosions, melee takedowns, and quiet stealth eliminations. Enemy AI was overhauled so that foes react more responsively to player actions; a single kill prompts nearby units to actively search for the shooter. Players carry binoculars that reveal enemy positions and weapon loadouts, and can tag both opponents and objects. A distinctive officers rank system adds strategic weight: killing a commanding officer early may cause his unit to withdraw, while leaving him alive until the mission's end raises the difficulty. Night missions let players remove light sources to mask their presence, and a trap system allows corpses to be rigged as booby traps. A new movement set adds climbing and ledge-grabbing. Maps are dramatically larger—the smallest here is three times the size of the biggest in Sniper Elite III—and feature greater verticality. Cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes also return.
Narrative & the Böhm Twist
Set in Italy in 1943, Sniper Elite 4 picks up right after its predecessor. The Royal Navy sends a freighter, the Orchidea, to the island of San Celini to investigate rumours of a new Nazi weapon. The ship is destroyed by a radio-guided anti-ship missile developed by scientist Andreas Kessler under General Heinz Böhm. SOE sniper Karl Fairburne, voiced by Tom Clarke-Hill, is sent to assassinate General Tobias Schmidt and film the kill for propaganda. He then works with OSS agent Jack Weaver and Sofia "Angel" Di Rocco, leader of a local Partisan group. After destroying a railway gun at Regelino Viaduct to prove himself, Fairburne investigates a dockyard shipping weapon parts, forges an alliance with Sicilian Mafia kingpin Salvatore Dinelli, and infiltrates the Magazzeno Facility to kidnap Kessler. Kessler, dying of liver cancer, feeds Angel a false lead about her father. The Partisans are massacred at Giovi Fiorini. The true villain is revealed when SOE informant Major Hans Dorfmann unmasks himself as Böhm. He executes Angel and attempts to flee by plane to attack General Eisenhower's ship during Operation Avalanche. Fairburne shoots out the engines, destroying the aircraft just as Allied Lancaster bombers level the base. In the epilogue, Jack offers Karl a position in the OSS.
Development & the 'Sniper Paradise' Vision
Rebellion Developments both developed and self-published Sniper Elite 4 digitally, a notable shift from the two preceding entries, which were handled by 505 Games. For physical retail copies, Rebellion partnered with Sold Out and U&I Entertainment, the same teams behind Zombie Army Trilogy. Tim Jones, Rebellion's Head of Creative, described the design goal as creating a "sniper paradise," which drove the team to expand map sizes and scale so that genuinely long shots were possible. The animation system, artificial intelligence, and rendering technology were all reworked to support this vision. The game's existence was accidentally exposed in February 2016 when a Chinese digital arts company inadvertently revealed it. CEO Jason Kingsley declined to confirm the title at the time but hinted that a new game was imminent. Sniper Elite 4 was officially announced on 7 March 2016, and its release was confirmed at E3 on 13 June 2016. The title ultimately launched on 14 February 2017 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with a Stadia version arriving on 1 November 2020 and a Nintendo Switch port following on 17 November 2020.
Franchise Position & Platform Longevity
Sniper Elite 4 sits as the direct sequel to Sniper Elite III within Rebellion Developments' long-running tactical shooter franchise. The game marked a publishing shift: while 505 Games handled distribution for the two preceding titles, Rebellion took full digital publishing control of the fourth entry, partnering only with Sold Out and U&I Entertainment for physical retail copies. The title's platform journey reflects a steady expansion over several years. It launched on 14 February 2017 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Three and a half years later, on 1 November 2020, the game became available on Google's Stadia cloud-gaming service, and just six days later, on 17 November 2020, a Nintendo Switch port brought the experience to the handheld and hybrid console. The franchise's momentum carried forward with the release of Sniper Elite 5 on 26 May 2022, confirming that Rebellion continued to build on the tactical stealth-shooter formula established and refined across these entries. The fourth installment's emphasis on larger maps, deeper AI, and the expanded X-Ray kill cam set the template that the sequel would inherit.
