Lore & Background
The game's story is divided into two portions. The main campaign puts the player in control of Sam Fisher three years after the events of Splinter Cell: Double Agent. The prologue, accessed through multiplayer co-op, puts two players in control of agents Archer and Kestrel 10 days before the campaign starts. In the prologue, Archer and Kestrel are deployed to Saint Petersburg, Russia, to halt rogue elements of the Russian military from selling advanced warheads.
They later go to Baku, Azerbaijan, to gather intelligence on an arms deal, and eventually infiltrate the Yastreb Complex under Moscow's Red Square and the Mozdok Proving Grounds. During extraction, Third Echelon director Tom Reed orders Archer to kill Kestrel; the canon ending has Kestrel fatally shooting Archer, then being shot in the head by Kobin. In the main campaign, Sam Fisher investigates the hit-and-run death of his daughter Sarah, learns from Anna 'Grim' Grímsdóttir that Sarah is still alive, and infiltrates locations including Kobin's mansion, Price Airfield, and White Box Technologies.
