Main characters
Ryuji Takayama is a college professor and the best friend of Kazuyuki Asakawa, the lead character in the first novel of the series, Ring. He is also alleged to be a rapist. After Kazuyuki watches the cursed videotape, he shows a copy of it to Ryuji, which allows Kazuyuki to escape the curse. However, as revealed in Spiral, the virus that causes the curse mutated when Kazuyuki copied the tape for Ryuji, leading to the deaths of Kazuyuki's wife and daughter despite their having done the same. In the 1999 television series Ring: The Final Chapter, Ryuji is not a friend of Kazuyuki, and it is not speculated that the two have previously known each other. In the film series, Kazuyuki's role is played by Reiko Asakawa, and Ryuji becomes her ex-husband and the father of her son Yoichi. The producers changed the gender of the lead character because they felt a woman would have more appeal to box office audiences.
