Premise

The story is set at Las Cumbres, a remote boarding school for troubled teenagers housed in an ancient monastery where students face harsh discipline. Four pupils—Manuel Villar, Amaia Torres, Paul Uribe, and his sister Adele Uribe—plan to escape. At the last moment, Adele loses her nerve, and Paul refuses to abandon her, so only Amaia and Manuel flee into the surrounding woods. Manuel trips and is knocked unconscious. Amaia then sees a dark figure dressed like a plague doctor, wearing a crow-like mask, pick him up and carry him away. Shortly after, headmistress Mara and gym teacher Mario capture Amaia, but they dismiss her account as hysterical fantasy. Determined to uncover the truth, Amaia and Paul, later joined by other friends, investigate Manuel’s disappearance. Their search uncovers an ancient secret society called La Logia del Nido del Cuervo—the Raven’s Nest or Crow’s Nest Lodge—along with other hidden mysteries at Las Cumbres.

Production and release

This series is a reboot of the earlier show El internado, which aired from 2007 to 2010. Laura Belloso and Asier Andueza, who were respectively co-creator and screenwriter of the original, created the new version. Atresmedia Studios and Globomedia produced it. The screenplay was written by Asier Andueza, Laura Belloso, Sara Belloso, and Abraham Sastre. Denis Rovira, Carles Torrens, and Jesús Rodrigo directed the episodes. The closing credits use the song "Corre" by Natalia Lacunza. Principal photography began in Navarre on 3 March 2020. Filming took place at the Monastery of Irache in Navarre, as well as in San Sebastián, Hondarribia, Lazkao, Usurbil, Ergoien, Bilbao, Anglet, and on sets at the Zinealdea complex in Oiartzun. The first season has eight episodes, each about 50 minutes long. On 6 May 2021, new cast members for a second season were announced. By that time, shooting for the eight-episode season, directed by Denis Rovira and Mikel Rueda, had already started.

Reception

Critics had mixed but largely positive reactions to the first season of The Boarding School: Las Cumbres. Alicia P. Ferreirós of SensaCine praised the pilot, the mythology, the scares, and the season finale, but noted that some non-central plots developed late and unevenly, and that certain secondary characters felt expendable. Mariló Delgado of Hobby Consolas gave the season 84 out of 100, commending the mystery, well-timed scares, and strong performances, while pointing out that secondary storylines struggled to start and sometimes led nowhere. Álvaro Cueva of Milenio described the series as capturing all the greatness of the original El Internado, but with modern editorial and technical capabilities.
