Format
A selection of hopefuls is boarded in "The Academy", managed by a headmaster, where they are coached by various professionals in several artistic disciplines and are filmed with cameras, an idea borrowed from another of Endemol's major reality shows, Big Brother. Once a week, the contestants face a prime time show, where they sing a cover version of a popular song they have prepared during the week, as well as recapping their trials and tribulations at The Academy from the past week. The live show often features special guest stars, with whom some contestants have the opportunity to sing. Based on the judges' verdicts and viewer voting, the weakest contestant is dropped. The eventual winner is awarded a record deal and/or some amount of money.
Series overview
The first six finalists of each season were born in Spain, with a few exceptions: Chenoa (series one) came from Argentina, Moritz Weisskopf (series five) from Germany, Chipper Cooke (series six) from the United States, Brenda Mau (series seven) from Peru, Alexandra Masangkay (series eight) from the Philippines, series eight winner Nahuel Sachak from Paraguay, series ten winner Famous Oberogo from the Netherlands, and both Lucas Curotto (series twelve) and Ruslana Panchyshyna (series twelve) from Uruguay and Ukraine, respectively. The three finalists of the very first season all put out debut albums. Rosa, backed by some of her fellow contestants, finished seventh at the 2002 Eurovision Song Contest with “Europe’s Living a Celebration” and saw strong album sales, but David Bisbal achieved international fame, taking home a Latin Grammy for Best Newcomer for his album Corazón Latino. Other contestants from that first season—Chenoa, Nuria Fergó, and Manu Tenorio—also built successful solo careers. Gisela landed a job with Disney Spain, moved into musical theater, and later represented Andorra at the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest. The second season broke the mold for popular reality music shows: the winner barely made a splash after the series ended, while several lower-placed contestants became huge stars across Europe and Latin America. Beth represented Spain at the 2003 Eurovision Song Contest, placing eighth with “Dime.” Mai Meneses, the first contestant eliminated, found fame in 2006 when she formed the band Nena Daconte with a childhood friend. Their debut album He Perdido Los Zapatos sold over 200,000 copies in Spain alone—a remarkable figure given that an album typically needs only about 20,000 sales to top the Spanish charts. Vega, who finished ninth, released the best-selling single of 2003 in Spain, “iGrita!,” which she wrote herself; it moved over one million copies. Ramón, the runner-up of season three, represented Spain at the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest, finishing tenth with “Para llenarme de ti.” This was the last season broadcast by TVE until 2017, and it also held the lowest ratings of any season until 2011.
