LHS 1140 b

A super-Earth that may be an ocean world.

LHS 1140 b is an exoplanet in the habitable zone of the red dwarf LHS 1140, about 49 light-years away. It was discovered in 2017 by the MEarth Project. It has about 5.6 times Earth's mass and a radius about 70% larger.

First thought to be a dense rocky world, refined measurements show a lower density, so it is likely an ocean planet with 9-19% of its mass in water. It receives 43% of the light Earth gets and transits its star, which makes it a good target for atmospheric study; a hinted helium atmosphere was not confirmed by JWST.
