History

SpaceDev, founded in 1997 by Jim Benson, was the world's first commercial space exploration company. It was formed from a merger between Integrated Space Systems and a defunct publicly traded corporate shell. In August 1998, SpaceDev acquired patents and documents from the bankrupt American Rocket Company, some later used for the Streaker.

The Streaker was announced in April 2003, part of a propulsion program based on the SpaceShipOne hybrid motor. SpaceDev also received an Air Force Research Laboratory contract for the Streaker's Hybrid Upper Stage. First launch was expected in 2007–08.
