Lee Jin-wook and Jo Yoon-hee played the lead roles in the 2013 South Korean television drama titled Nine.[1] Twenty episodes of this series were broadcast on tvN, scheduled at 23:00 KST on Mondays and Tuesdays, from March 11 until May 14, 2013.[1] The plot of this science fiction and romance drama centers on a protagonist who discovers nine enchanted incense sticks granting him the ability to journey two decades into the past.[2]
Making and release
The series was produced by CJ E&M Corp. and became available in the U.S. on Hulu.[3] ABC put an untitled hourlong project based on Nine into development with ABC Studios and Fake Empire in October 2013.[3] Former Lost co-star Yunjin Kim was involved in the adaptation project for ABC.[3] A Yonhap News Agency article from October 2016 reported that the remake project fell through.[4]
An official at Zyon Entertainment, which was involved in the remake project, stated that a remake contract usually comes with a two-year deadline.[4] The official said if the pilot program is not made within two years, the project is over.[4] The series stars Park Hyung-sik as Park Sun-woo and Jo Min-ah as Joo Min-young among its cast.[5] Other cast members include Seo Woo-jin as Park Jung-woo and Lee Yi-kyung as Han Young-hoon.[5]
What the cited sources add
A Yonhap News Agency article from 2016 noted that K-dramas have gained a wide U.S. audience, with Viki even creating a spoof capturing Korean series cliches.[4] The same article reported that among the most talked-about U.S. remake attempts was the 2013 tvN series "Nine: Nine Time Travels," which nearly reached a deal with Fake Empire Productions.[4] The article also stated that some 300-500 series are conceived each year in the U.S., but only about 50 become pilot programs.[4] A Review Asian Series blog post from August 2013 described the ending as open to interpretation due to the show's unique way of dealing with time travel.[6][7]
The blog post noted that in episode 19, present Park Sun Woo makes changes in the past to create a happy future for everyone.[7]
