A 2020 South Korean action series based on a webtoon.
Last updated
From March 28 to May 17, 2020, the series was broadcast on OCN in South Korea and made available globally on Netflix.[1]
Making and release
The series is based on a webtoon of the same name by Rel.mae.[1] OCN described "Rugal" as a sci-fi thriller action hero series.[2] The story follows an organization of people whose body parts are reformed and strengthened through biotechnology.[2] This organization, named Rugal, fights against the terrorist group Argos.[2]
Producer Kang Cheol-woo explained that "Rugal" is a Korean name meaning "dry tears."[2] It refers to the two artificial eyes of the main character Kang Ki-beom.[2] Rookie actress Han Ji-wan plays a villainess of Argos.[2] Actor Park Sun-ho plays the youngest member of Rugal.[2]
What the cited sources add
The Korea Herald reported that producer Kang Cheol-woo said the main character gradually loses his human quality and turns into a monster with special eyes.[2] The Korea Herald article quotes a speaker who stated that the series represented a new challenge for Korean dramas in realistically depicting sci-fi elements.[2]
