Circle (TV series)

Two timelines, one alien technology, twin brothers.

Last updated

The drama follows a series of mysterious suicides in 2017 and an Orwellian surveillance society in 2037 where the government controls memories and emotions.[1] Yeo Jin-goo, Kim Kang-woo, Gong Seung-yeon, and Lee Gi-kwang are the actors starring in the 2017 South Korean science fiction television series Circle.[2] From May 22 to June 27, 2017, tvN broadcast 12 episodes of this series, each airing at 23:00 KST on Mondays and Tuesdays.[3]

Making and release

The drama used a double-track format, with "Part 1: Beta Project" covering 2017 and "Part 2: Brave New World" covering 2037.[1] Each episode presented both time periods simultaneously, not as time travel but as coexisting worlds.[4] The Korea Herald reported in March 2017 that the drama would hit TV screens in May.[5] Min Jin-ki, who previously worked on "Saturday Night Live Korea," directed the series.[5]

What the cited sources add

Director Min Jin-ki stated that the double-track format made the drama resemble an American sci-fi series and appealed to viewers.[1] The Korea Times reported that "Circle" opened the gate for local sci-fi dramas, a genre previously avoided due to the burdens of computer graphics.[1] The drama explored the conundrum of what individual memory means and whether erasing painful memories would improve life.[1]
