Synopsis

In an alternate Joseon dynasty, Jo Yang-sun, the daughter of a nobleman whose family loses everything after her father is framed for treason, begins cross-dressing as a male bookseller to earn money. She meets Kim Sung-yeol, a handsome scholar at the Hongmungwan who has spent 120 years as a guardian vampire responsible for eliminating vampires who break the rules. Sung-yeol can go out in sunlight while wearing a special black robe. He remains haunted by the death of his first love, Lee Myung-hee, who sacrificed herself for him 120 years earlier. Sung-yeol offers Yang-sun a high price if she can find the memorandum of his late best friend, Crown Prince Jonghyun, which contains the secret to killing the vampire Gwi. After their second meeting, Sung-yeol discovers Yang-sun is a girl but keeps it secret. Yang-sun seeks the memorandum to cure her sister's leg. On a trip with Yang-sun, Sung-yeol encounters Choi Hye-ryung, a present-day doppelgänger of Myung-hee and the aloof daughter of the Right Minister, who has served Gwi loyally and even sacrificed Hye-ryung to Gwi at age ten. Gwi has fallen in love with Hye-ryung and plans to turn her into a vampire. Gwi resides in the underground royal palace and uses his powers to prevent Crown Prince Lee Yoon from ascending the throne.
