Club history

The Melbourne Tigers began in 1931, the same year the Victorian Basketball Association was formed. The senior men’s side originally played as St Lukes from North Fitzroy, using St Lukes hall from 1924. Over time, the club’s name shifted from St Lukes to Church of England, then to Church, then to Melbourne Church, before finally adopting the Melbourne Tigers name in 1975. Ken Watson, who coached the senior teams from the 1940s through the 1970s, is regarded as the club’s founder. The junior boys’ program started in 1959 through the Saturday night Church of England Boys’ Society competition at Albert Park Stadium, while junior girls’ basketball did not begin until 1968. When the CEBS competition ended in 1970, the Melbourne Tigers Junior Basketball Association took over running the competitions at Albert Park. Watson stayed involved with the junior teams until the early 2000s. In 2025, the Melbourne Basketball Association, which traces back to 1931, merged with several other associations and clubs to create the Melbourne Central Basketball Association.

From 1965 to 1970, Melbourne Church of England won the South Eastern Conference championship every year; the league itself was abandoned in 1971. The Tigers became a founding team of the South East Australian Basketball League in 1981. The following year, they finished second on the SEABL ladder and reached the ABA National grand final, where they lost to the Frankston Bears. In 1983, they topped the SEABL ladder to claim the SEABL championship, then won the ABA National grand final by defeating the Bulleen Boomers. The Melbourne Tigers NBL team was created in 1984 and entered the National Basketball League; that franchise rebranded as Melbourne United in 2014. A Tigers state league men’s team joined the Big V Championship Division in 2004, winning back-to-back Big V titles in 2008 and 2009. After the 2015 season, the Tigers men’s team left the Big V and returned to the SEABL in 2016 for the first time since 1983. When the SEABL folded in 2019, both the Tigers men’s and women’s teams moved to the NBL1 South. During the 2025 NBL1 South season, the Tigers men made it to the grand final but fell 99–80 to the Sandringham Sabres.
