Men's team history

The Ballarat Basketball Association was incorporated in 1966 and built its own facility in 1969 at the corner of Grevillea Road and Dowling Street in Wendouree, later known as the Ballarat Minerdome. After developing a strong local program, the association applied in 1985 to join the South East Australian Basketball League, and the Miners debuted in the SEABL in 1986. Goorjian left after 1987 and was succeeded by Al Westover, who led the Miners to a conference three-peat from 1989 to 1991: the South Conference in 1989 and 1990, then the East Conference in 1991. The Miners also won the ABA National championship in 1989. Westover received the inaugural Coach of the Year award in 1990, while Eric Cooks earned SEABL MVP in 1989 and 1990. Brendan Joyce took over in 1993; his first season saw a 20–4 regular-season record, though the team lost the Conference Semi-final and finished second overall. In 1994 and 1995, the Miners won back-to-back ABA National championships with records of 18–4 and 19–3, and Joyce earned consecutive Coach of the Year awards in 1994 and 1995. Paul Hotchin became head coach in 1996, leading the team to another final, where they lost to North West Tasmania after a 16–6 regular season. Over the four-year period with Hotchin and Joyce, Ballarat posted a 73–17 regular-season record, a 2–2 mark in Conference Finals, and a 7–1 record in National Finals, for an overall 82–20 record. After an eight-year playoff drought, the Miners returned to the post-season in 2014 and again in 2015. Following a missed post-season in 2016, they reached the SEABL South Conference final in 2017, their first conference final appearance in 16 years.

Women's team history

The Ballarat Miners women's basketball program began as the Lady Miners in 1984, entering the Victorian championship. They competed in the first SEABL women's season in 1990 before withdrawing, then joined the Victorian Basketball League and became a founding team of the Big V in 2000. Between 1995 and 2002, the Lady Miners captured eight consecutive titles: five VBL Division One championships from 1995 to 1999, followed by the first three Big V crowns. In 2003, the team returned to the SEABL and merged with the Ballarat Miners under the Ballarat Basketball Association. They won the SEABL championship in 2005 and the ABA National championship in both 2005 and 2006. The Lady Miners were renamed the Ballarat Rush in 2011. After the SEABL folded, the Rush joined the NBL1 South in 2019, though the 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In November 2021, Basketball Ballarat united the female and male programs, rebranding the Rush as the Ballarat Miners starting in 2022.
