Key facts and history

Glickenhaus then took the project to Avco Embassy Pictures, which provided $6 million in production costs.[3] The idea for the film came to James Glickenhaus after he read John McPhee's The Curve of Binding Energy, a book about how plutonium is moved around.[4] For the first time, a movie crew was allowed to shoot at the real Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin.[5] George Strait, a country music performer, appears briefly in the film singing "Fool-Hearted Memory," a song he wrote for the movie.[6][7]

What the cited sources add

A 2017 review notes the film is remembered mainly for a ski chase where the Soldier executes a 360° turn while firing a machine gun.[2] The same review states the Soldier's name is never revealed and he leads a team of special agents.[2] The review also mentions that Mossad assigns an agent played by Alberta Watson to help the Soldier.[2] Glickenhaus stated in an interview that he worked with George Strait, who wrote "Fool-Hearted Memory" for the movie.[7]

The interview also notes that Avco Embassy wanted Glickenhaus to do a more mainstream film after The Exterminator, which was The Soldier.[7] A 2014 soundtrack release is described as a compilation of excerpts from official Tangerine Dream albums, with new track titles not mentioning the real origin.[8]
