Key facts and history
Kevin Hart joined the cast in January 2021, training with Navy SEALs for the role of Roland.[4] The film underwent two weeks of reshoots directed by Tim Miller in January 2023.[5] A conversation about adapting Borderlands into a film was first had in 2011 between Gearbox Software's CEO Randy Pitchford and the Arad Productions producers Ari and Avi Arad.[6] Lionsgate made the film's official announcement in August 2015.[6]
Lionsgate announced on February 20, 2020, that Eli Roth would direct the film, with a script written by Craig Mazin.[7] The first public showing of Borderlands occurred on August 6, 2024, at the TCL Chinese Theatre located in Los Angeles.[1] Deadline Hollywood determined that after accounting for all income and expenditures, Lionsgate incurred an $80 million loss on the film.[2]
What the cited sources add
A PC Gamer review called the film "uninspired scene after loosely connected uninspired scene"[8] Cate Blanchett mentioned that "Covid madness" and her husband's comment that the film "could save your life" were factors in her decision to accept the role.[9]
