Background and title
Snoop revealed the album's title at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, in January 2015. The track "So Many Pros" originated as a Timbaland recording titled "Been It" featuring Pharrell Williams and Justin Timberlake; after Timbaland's album was cancelled, Pharrell reworked it. The lyrics remained largely unchanged except the phrase "so many hoes" became "so many pros," which became the track's title. Amateur footage showed Timberlake recording his portion of the music video during The 20/20 Experience World Tour and Timbaland recording on a beach with scantily clad models.
Critical reception
Bush received generally positive reviews. On Metacritic, it scored 69 out of 100 based on 20 reviews; AnyDecentMusic? gave it 6.2 out of 10. David Jeffries of AllMusic called it a "delayed dank disco triumph." Brian Josephs of Consequence noted that "the only reason you're at this party is because Snoop invited you."
August Brown of the Los Angeles Times observed that few 1990s rappers could credibly settle into such a sound. Kate Hutchinson of The Guardian described it as "a high five of an album, made for hydraulic cars and throbbing dancefloors." Kellan Miller of HipHopDX said the diminished returns resulted from "an excellent dream deferred by poor execution." Phil Hebblethwaite of NME remarked that Snoop takes a surprising back seat, singing low and seldom rapping, but it works.
Jonathan Frahm of PopMatters called it "another consistent release." Roger Krastz of XXL found it "a fun and enjoyable listen from start to finish." Julian Kimble of Pitchfork wondered what might have happened if this crew had followed R&G with a full-length a decade earlier. Brittany Spanos of Rolling Stone said it was "a pleasant stroll down memory lane." Kris Ex of Billboard noted the ten tracks are "laid-back—perhaps too much."
Commercial performance
Bush entered the US Billboard 200 at number 14, pulling in 32,000 album-equivalent units, with 27,000 of those being pure sales and 2.8 million streams in its first week. It marked Snoop’s sixth solo album to hit number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The following week, it fell to number 44, adding 12,000 album-equivalent units and 9,000 pure sales. In the UK, it landed at number 25 on the albums chart and number two on the R&B chart, his tenth solo album to debut in the top ten there. By May 2016, worldwide sales reached 250,000 copies.
