History

Jim Herr purchased a small potato chip company in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1946 at age 21, with initial sales averaging about $30 a week. Flavored potato chips were introduced in 1958, and the company switched to foil packaging in 1974. During the 1970s and 1980s, the product line expanded to include corn chips, tortilla chips, and pretzels. The Herr Angus Farm, which used potato waste, was added in the 1980s. Control transferred to his sons Ed Herr and J. M. Herr in the 1990s. Jim retired as chair in January 2005 but remained on the board. By December 2025, J. M. had retired, Ed became executive chairman, and Troy Gunden assumed the roles of president and CEO.

Products

Herr's produces potato chips, pretzels, tortilla chips, cheese curls, popcorn, and onion rings. As of July 2016, they offered 37 potato chip varieties, emphasizing strong and spicy flavors such as Ragin Ranch, Buffalo Blue Cheese, Old Bay, Horseradish, Baby Back Ribs, Kansas City Steak, Hot Sauce, and Jalapeño, alongside traditional options. In February 2016, a Crab Fries flavor was released in partnership with Chickie's & Pete's, and a line was also released with Stubb's Bar-B-Q. The chips are sold in distinctive foil packaging.
