Wobbledogs
A pet sim with mutation, breeding, and sandbox elements.
Wobbledogs is a pet simulation game made by Tom Astle and released by Secret Mode. It came out for PC on March 15, 2022, and for the Nintendo Switch on November 17, 2022. The game blends pet care with sandbox features, and its breeding system is fully developed, letting players create mutated dogs.
In gameplay, players look after wobbly dogs. The breeding system mixes and passes down traits through genetics. Dogs gain traits by eating different foods, which adds new flora to their gut. Several times during a dog’s life, it enters a chrysalis and mutates, with gut flora affecting both physical changes and behavior. Dogs reproduce by laying eggs. The dogs’ home is a set of tubes connecting different rooms, and players can build and edit this space.
Tom Astle, the creator based in Los Angeles, originally had a vision close to the final game. He spent two years trying out different gameplay ideas to find the perfect fit, but that approach didn’t work. He decided the only way to finish was to go back to what had worked and focus on that. Wobbledogs entered early access on January 28, 2021, left it on March 15, 2022, and launched on Nintendo Switch later that year. A free Desert Patch arrived near the end of 2023, adding desert-themed toys and decorations.
NME enjoyed the game’s goofiness, comparing it to a mix of Nintendogs and Mewgenics, but noted it might not suit everyone because mutation takes a long time and the core loop is simple. Rock Paper Shotgun’s Lauren Morton called it “the kind of brightly-colored fun that I was longing for as a kid when I rented the Catz 5 from my local library.” PC Gamer said the game is more about passive observation than solving puzzles. As of March 15, 2022, user reviews on Steam were “overwhelmingly positive.”

Lore & Background
Wobbledogs is a pet simulation game where the player cares for wobbly dogs. It features a fully functioning breeding system with traits mixed together and passed down via genetics. Dogs acquire traits by eating different foods, which introduce new flora into their gut. At several points in the dogs' lifespans, they enter a chrysalis and mutate, with gut flora influencing physical and behavioral changes. Dogs reproduce by laying eggs. The game also includes sandbox elements; the home of the wobbly dogs, consisting of a series of tubes leading to different rooms, can be edited and constructed. Tom Astle, the Los Angeles-based creator, originally envisioned the game fairly similarly to its final form. He spent two years prototyping various gameplay concepts in the hopes one would be a perfect fit, but this approach failed. He decided the only way to finish the game was to return to what had worked and focus specifically on that. Wobbledogs first entered early access on January 28, 2021, exited early access on March 15, 2022, and released on Nintendo Switch on November 17, 2022. It later received a free Desert Patch near the end of 2023, adding new desert-themed toys and decorations.
Reader's Guide
Wobbledogs received a mixed but generally positive critical reception. NME was endeared with its goofiness, likening it to a cross between Nintendogs and Mewgenics, but acknowledged that the game may not be for everyone, noting that mutation is a lengthy system and it has a simplistic core loop. Rock Paper Shotgun author Lauren Morton described it as 'the kind of brightly-colored fun that I was longing for as a kid when I rented the Catz 5 from my local library.' PC Gamer stated 'the game is more passive observation than puzzle.' The game received 'overwhelmingly positive' user reviews on Steam as of March 15, 2022. Its significance lies in its unique combination of pet simulation, genetic mutation, and sandbox construction, offering a distinctive experience that appealed to players seeking a less demanding, observational style of gameplay. The free Desert Patch extended its content post-launch.
