Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma

A Rune Factory spin-off blending farming, combat, and god restoration.

Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma

Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma is a role-playing simulation game from Marvelous, released on June 5, 2025, for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and Windows. As a spin-off of the Rune Factory series, it combines farming simulation with action role-playing gameplay and earned generally positive reviews from critics.

Players can grow crops, fight monsters, and build relationships with non-player characters. Certain areas let players place farmland, buildings, and decorations. Farming can be done manually or assigned to villagers. Activities grant experience points used in skill trees, and Sacred Treasures provide benefits in both combat and daily life. The game expands social interactions, allowing players to recruit characters into their party for battle. Several romance options are available regardless of the player character's gender.

The story takes place in Azuma, a mountainous region inspired by traditional Japanese aesthetics, divided into seasonal zones with unique environments and festivals. The protagonist must restore Azuma's gods after the Celestial Collapse, when an unknown object fell from the sky and disrupted the land's magical runes. A black dragon has spread Blight across Azuma that the protagonist must purify.

At the start, the player chooses a male or female protagonist; the unchosen character becomes the black dragon's rider. After a confrontation with the dragon, the protagonist crash-lands in Spring Village and lives there with no memory. The spring god Ulalaka reveals the protagonist is an Earth Dancer. The protagonist meets Woolby, a descendant of the legendary dragon Mihoshi Habaki. After restoring Ulalaka's powers, the protagonist repairs a shrine, allowing Woolby to become Mokoshiro, the White Dragon. Ulalaka then sends the protagonist to revive the other three villages' gods.

In Summer Village, the protagonist repairs a sword containing the summer god to revive her. In Autumn Village, the protagonist arranges a fighting festival against the autumn god's wishes, angering but reviving him. In Winter Village, the protagonist returns the wolf-like winter god Fubuki to human form and stops a woman named Clarice from killing him.

With four gods revived, Ulalaka asks the protagonist to remove a barrier around the Epicenter, where the Celestial Collapse occurred.

Lore & Background

The game is set in the fantasy region of Azuma, a mountainous territory inspired by traditional Japanese aesthetics divided into seasonal zones. The story begins after a calamity called the Celestial Collapse, when an unknown object fell from the sky and disrupted the land's magical runes. A black dragon spreads Blight that the protagonist must purify. The player chooses between a male or female protagonist; the character not selected becomes the black dragon's rider. After a confrontation with the black dragon, the protagonist crash-lands in Spring Village and lives there after losing their memory. The spring god Ulalaka reveals the protagonist is an Earth Dancer, and the protagonist meets Woolby, a descendant of the legendary dragon Mihoshi Habaki. The protagonist helps restore Ulalaka's powers and repairs a shrine, allowing Woolby to regain his true form as Mokoshiro, the White Dragon. The protagonist then travels to revive the gods of Summer, Autumn, and Winter villages. With four gods revived, the protagonist removes a barrier around the Epicenter of the Celestial Collapse, encounters the black dragon, and recognizes its rider as the other protagonist. The protagonist recalls they were childhood friends instructed to offer amulets at Astral Shrines to save Azuma. The protagonist learns that their friend formed a pact with the black dragon, meaning killing the dragon would kill their friend. With help from Kai, god of the Underworld, and Kanata, god of the Heavenly Realm, the protagonist defeats the black dragon and severs the pact. However, Clarice attacks and mortally wounds the protagonist's friend; the protagonist may sacrifice relationships, experience, or wealth to save them. The protagonist later learns Clarice leads the Tagesanbruch, an organization aiming to kill Azuma's gods, and that she is cursed by Kamurosaki, an evil god. The protagonist defeats Kamurosaki, frees Clarice from the curse, and defeats Mihoshi Habaki, preventing Azuma's destruction.

Reader's Guide

Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma is notable as a spin-off that reimagines the Rune Factory formula while retaining its core blend of farming simulation and action RPG elements. Critics praised its engaging story and character development, with Nintendo Life awarding it a 9 out of 10, stating it 'manages to reinvent itself while still maintaining the bones that make the Rune Factory series feel like itself.' RPG Fan gave it a 94 out of 100, calling it 'the best series entry yet.' However, some reviewers noted shortcomings: RPG Site rated it 6 out of 10, citing 'boring dungeons and weak RPG progression tools' despite a 'fun cast of characters and decent story,' and TechRaptor also gave it a 6 out of 10, mentioning that 'despite character events being the best they've ever been, [the game] fails to offer much depth after its opening hours.' The game's development began in September 2021 following Rune Factory 5, and it was announced in May 2023 under the codename 'Project Dragon.' Originally planned for May 30, 2025, it was delayed to June 5, 2025. Its significance lies in expanding the series' social interactions, allowing romance options regardless of the player character's gender, and introducing customizable areas and skill trees.
