Game Dev Tycoon

A 2012 business sim about making video games.

Game Dev Tycoon

Game Dev Tycoon is a business simulation game from 2012, created by Greenheart Games and launched on December 10 of that year. Players take charge of a video game development studio, beginning in a garage during the early 1980s arcade boom. The game draws inspiration from Kairosoft's Game Dev Story, and many reviewers noted strong similarities between the two titles.

Greenheart Games was founded in July 2012 by brothers Patrick and Daniel Klug. In the game, players start with no staff, limited funds, and few options for their first project. As they release games, new features unlock. Building a first game engine improves development skills. Over time, fictional consoles parodying real-world hardware—such as the GS, PlaySystem, mBox, Vena Oasis, TES, and grPad—become available for licensing. Players can move to larger offices, hire employees, and later open an R&D lab to unlock major projects like MMOs and online game shops (parodies of Steam, Ubisoft Connect, and the App Store). A Hardware Lab allows creation of original consoles and devices.

The game supports mods written in JavaScript via the gdt-modAPI. By June 16, 2026, Steam Workshop hosted 943 mods, ranging from simple additions like new consoles and topics to complex libraries such as UltimateLib. Many mods are created using a third-party tool called the Ultimate Module Editor (UME).

Greenheart Games included a notable anti-piracy measure. Knowing the game would be widely torrented, Patrick Klug uploaded a cracked version to torrent sites himself. This version plays identically until players receive a message: "Boss, it seems that while many players play our new game, they steal it by downloading a cracked version rather than buying it legally. If players don't buy the games they like, we will sooner or later go bankrupt." Eventually, the pirated version causes players to lose money and go bankrupt. Some users complained about this feature on forums, unaware it only appeared because they were using a cracked copy.

A mobile version was released for Netflix subscribers in March 2024, but it was withdrawn on March 11, 2026.

On Metacritic, Game Dev Tycoon received mixed reviews on Windows and positive reviews on iOS and Switch.

Lore & Background

Game Dev Tycoon was created by Greenheart Games, a company founded in July 2012 by brothers Patrick and Daniel Klug. The player starts in a garage during the golden age of arcade video games with no employees, limited money, and limited choices for the first game. As new games are created, new options unlock, and building the first game engine improves the player's development skills. New consoles parodying real-life devices—such as the GS, PlaySystem, mBox, Vena Oasis, TES, and grPad—are released, and the player can buy licenses for them. Later, the player can move to new offices, hire staff, open an R&D lab to unlock MMOs and online game shops, and open a Hardware Lab to create consoles.

The game supports mods written in JavaScript with the gdt-modAPI. As of 16 June 2026, there were 943 mods on Steam Workshop, ranging from simple additions like new consoles and topics to complex libraries like UltimateLib. A common tool for creating mods is the third-party Ultimate Module Editor (UME).

A notable anti-piracy measure was implemented: the developers purposely released a cracked version on torrent sites. In that version, players eventually receive a message about piracy and gradually lose money until bankruptcy. Some players complained about this feature on forums, unaware it only appeared because they had pirated the game. Netflix released a mobile version in March 2024, free for subscribers, which was withdrawn on March 11, 2026.

Reader's Guide

Game Dev Tycoon is notable for its deliberate anti-piracy measure, which the developers implemented by uploading a cracked version themselves. This version simulated the effects of piracy by causing the player's in-game company to go bankrupt, leading some pirates to complain publicly without realizing they were playing an unauthorized copy. The game received mixed reviews on Windows and positive reviews on iOS and Switch on Metacritic. Its modding community, supported by the gdt-modAPI and tools like Ultimate Module Editor, produced 943 mods on Steam Workshop as of June 2026. The game's inspiration from Game Dev Story and its parody of real consoles and platforms (such as the GS, PlaySystem, and mBox) reflect its focus on simulating the game development industry. The Netflix mobile version, released in March 2024 and withdrawn in March 2026, extended its reach to subscribers.
