The Dark Legacy of Shannara

A trilogy set a century after the High Druid of Shannara.

The Dark Legacy of Shannara

Terry Brooks’s *The Dark Legacy of Shannara* is a novel series set one hundred years after the events of the *High Druid of Shannara* trilogy. The story follows Khyber Elessedil’s search for the lost Elfstones. The first installment, *Wards of Faerie*, came out from Del Rey Books in August 2012.

In *Wards of Faerie*, the Four Lands’ inhabitants have grown wary of magic following the Third Druid Council’s failure. A druid uncovers clues that could lead to the lost Elfstones, which Ard Rhys Khyber Elessedil now pursues.

*Bloodfire Quest* finds Aphenglow and her sister Arlingfant trying to seal the Forbidding, while Redden remains trapped inside it, at the mercy of the Straken lord. Khyber is not trapped there; she leads the quest from outside. Railing searches for a way to save his brother.

*Witch Wraith*, the direct continuation of *Bloodfire Quest*, follows sisters Arling and Aphen Elessedil as they attempt to repair a breach in the Forbidding. Meanwhile, Railing Ohmsford tries to summon the shade of his relative Grianne (the former Ilse Witch) from the Forbidding to free his brother Redden and destroy the Straken lord Tael Riverine.

Lore & Background

The Dark Legacy of Shannara begins with Wards of Faerie (2012), in which the people of the Four Lands have become distrustful of magic after the failure of the Third Druid Council. One druid uncovers information that could lead to the rediscovery of the lost Elfstones, which Ard Rhys of Paranor Khyber Elessedil now seeks.

The second book, Bloodfire Quest (2013), follows Aphenglow and her sister Arlingfant as they seek a way to reseal the Forbidding, whilst Redden is still stuck within at the mercy of the Straken lord. Khyber is not trapped there; she leads the quest from outside. Meanwhile, Railing searches for a way to save his brother.

The final book, Witch Wraith (2013), is the immediate continuation of Bloodfire Quest. It chronicles the attempts of two sisters, Arling and Aphen Elessedil, to repair a breach in the Forbidding—and the attempt of Railing Ohmsford to summon the shade of his relative Grianne (the former Ilse Witch) from the Forbidding to release his brother Redden and destroy the Straken lord Tael Riverine.

Reader's Guide

The Dark Legacy of Shannara represents a continuation of Terry Brooks's long-running Shannara series, focusing on the consequences of the Third Druid Council's failure and the quest to recover the lost Elfstones. The trilogy deepens the lore of the Forbidding and the Elessedil and Ohmsford families. Its significance lies in bridging the gap between the High Druid trilogy and later events, while introducing new conflicts such as the Straken lord Tael Riverine. The series is notable for its dual narrative threads: Khyber's search for the Elfstones and the sisters' efforts to reseal the Forbidding. By concluding with the destruction of Tael Riverine and the rescue of Redden, the trilogy provides closure to storylines initiated in earlier books. It remains a key entry for readers following the chronological development of the Four Lands.
