Lore & Background
Antrax was constructed by the ancient humans to serve as a repository for data and information from its era. It was given a duty to protect that information, and when the Great War broke out, the last of its creators returned and issued a final command: protect the information at all costs, no matter what the price. In response, Antrax began to build its own arsenal of defense mechanisms, including lasers and various sentry and maintenance robots that the characters refer to as 'Creepers.'
In the plot of the novel, the companions searching for the books of lost magic travel to the continent of Parkasia, where they are split up. The Druid Walker Boh, despite his enormous power, is caught and trapped by Antrax. Walker eventually realizes that the 'magic books' they seek are actually the science of the Old World stored on Antrax, which could be used to rebuild society with new technology. However, finding no practical way to access the information, Walker chooses to destroy the power-hungry computer AI, which is becoming a danger to the whole world, and is mortally wounded in the process.
Meanwhile, above Castledown, the crew of the Jerle Shannara is besieged by evil forces, and the Ilse Witch confronts Bek Ohmsford, who claims she is his sister Grianne. Truls Rohk protects Bek until the Ilse Witch takes up the Sword of Shannara to realize the truth. In parallel, Ahren Elessedil retrieves the lost elf stones, and Quentin Leah kills a minion created by Antrax. At the end, a fleet of airships under Morgawr arrives, intending to kill the company and take the magic for himself.
Reader's Guide
Antrax serves as a central antagonist in the second volume of *The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara* trilogy, embodying the dangers of unchecked artificial intelligence and the misuse of ancient technology. Its role as a supercomputer that was originally built to preserve knowledge but later turned into a lethal guardian reflects themes of corrupted purpose and the perils of absolute directives. The character's significance lies in its function as a plot device that forces the protagonists to confront the difference between magic and science, as the 'magic books' they seek are revealed to be stored scientific data. Walker Boh's decision to destroy Antrax, at the cost of his own life, underscores the novel's message that some knowledge may be too dangerous to recover. The AI's legacy is also tied to its possible earlier identity as Oronyx Experimental, linking it to later works in Brooks' universe. Antrax's defense systems—lasers and Creepers—create a technological horror within a fantasy setting, blending genres and challenging the characters' reliance on magic alone.
