In the northern reaches of the Four Lands, a Troll army is annihilated by a force of soldiers who can vanish at will, making them devastatingly effective against the trolls. The Druid council, alarmed by the event, dispatches druids Zia and Ruis to investigate, accompanied by Darcon Leah, the High Blade and commander of Paranor's guard. High Druid Ober Balronen tasks Dar with monitoring the two druids' conduct. As the group travels north aboard an airship, Zia confesses her feelings for Dar, and Ruis insists on conducting a solo ground-level reconnaissance despite Dar's warnings. The mysterious enemy strikes, and Ruis is executed. The survivors flee into the mountains, but the pursuers destroy their airship. Every passenger perishes except Dar, who leaps from the wreckage onto a cliff face and climbs down to safety. A white-cloaked figure spots him, could end him instantly, yet after a tense standoff, allows him to live. Dar eventually returns to Paranor to report the catastrophe and proposes seeking Elven assistance—a suggestion that incenses Balronen and leads directly to Dar's banishment and exile.

The Paranor Conspiracy and the Black Elfstone

Beneath the surface of the druid order, a web of deception unfolds. Kassen Drue, a young man who can disappear and project illusions, infiltrates Paranor as a Druid-in-Training. He seduces Allis, a fellow trainee, to learn the secret entrance into the fortress, then murders her. Simultaneously, Clizia Porse, a senior druid, orchestrates a far darker scheme. When Drisker Arc and Tarsha arrive at Paranor seeking aid, the High Druid refuses to see them. Clizia brings Drisker up to speed and provides a scrye orb for communication, yet she lies about knowing the man who hired his assassin. When Kassen's vanishing soldiers invade Paranor and begin slaughtering the druids, Clizia persuades Drisker to retrieve the Black Elfstone and send the entire fortress into limbo. Drisker, though distrustful, agrees to protect his order. He releases the Guardian from the Druid's Well, whose deadly green mist mows down the invaders. Yet Clizia strikes him with a paralytic poison, and while Dar fights the remaining soldiers, she uses the Black Elfstone to erase Paranor from the Four Lands entirely, abandoning Dar behind. Drisker, trapped in limbo, realizes the Guardian has spared him—but his prison is now the vanished fortress itself.

Tarsha's Quest and the Orsis Guild

Tarsha Kaynin, the more controlled of the Wishsong siblings, resolves to seek druidic training after her brother's violent rejection. She finds Drisker Arc, the former High Druid of Paranor, near the town of Emberen, and impresses him with a display of her abilities. Her studies are interrupted when Drisker is summoned to aid the Trolls, leaving his cottage vulnerable. Assassins from the Orsis Guild attack, and Tarsha barely escapes with two heavy volumes of spells and conjurings, aided by a forest imp named Flinc who is infatuated with her. Drisker returns to find his home in ruins and is told by Flinc that Tarsha has been killed—a lie the imp quickly retracts. A second assassination attempt follows, and Drisker kills several of the attackers, identifying them as members of the Orsis Guild. In the city of Varfleet, an orphan named Shea Ohmsford guides them to the Guild's stronghold, where they confront Tigueron, the assassin hired to kill Drisker. He reveals his employer before Drisker snaps his neck. At a tavern, a seer named Parlindru joins Tarsha and delivers a prophecy: three times she will love, three times she will die, and three times she will make a difference.
