Fingering (sexual act)
Last updated
Fingering is sexual stimulation of the vulva or vagina using the fingers, and the term "digital" comes from the English word 'digit' meaning finger, thumb, or toe.[1][2] When a person stimulates their own vulva or vagina with their fingers, that action qualifies as masturbation; additionally, fingering can serve as foreplay, a means of arousal, or the entirety of a sexual experience.[2]
Key facts and history
The lower third of the vagina has concentrations of nerve endings that can provide pleasurable sensations when stimulated.[3] The most frequent method for a woman to experience orgasm involves massaging the vulva, particularly the clitoris.[4] To target the area called the G-spot, which is about 5 cm up on the vagina's anterior wall, people often perform vaginal fingering.[5] The G-spot is characterized by having ridges and a texture that is slightly rougher than the surrounding vaginal walls.[5]
Some women report that the "come hither" technique, which uses the middle finger with the palm facing upward, significantly helps them reach orgasm.[6] The pleasure from anal fingering comes from the many nerve endings in the anal region and the stretching of the anal sphincter muscles.[7]
What the cited sources add
The source "Understanding the Concept of Digital Rape" explains that before the Nirbhaya Gang Rape case, digital penetration without consent was considered only molestation.[8] Under the POCSO Act, inserting any part of the body not being the penis into a child's vagina, urethra, or anus is considered penetrative sexual assault.[8] The Dazed Beauty article notes that some queer women assume short nails are a queer signifier related to fingering.[9] Genderqueer artist Sammaneh Pourshafighi stated that short nails can be a surface-level indicator of some types of sexuality.[9]
Lesbian and non-binary femme Izzy MacC said they got a set of nails done before a hookup specifically because they knew the partner enjoyed being scratched.[9]
