History
East Stirlingshire's official formation was in 1881, though its origins go back to 1880 when a cricket club called Bainsford Bluebonnets formed a football team named Britannia. The first recorded match was a 7–0 friendly defeat to Falkirk's second eleven in December 1880; the first match as East Stirlingshire was against the same opponent in August 1881. The club's nickname, "The Shire", refers to the Stirlingshire part of its name. After joining the Scottish Football Association, it entered the Scottish Cup in 1882, losing its first game.
Lawrence McLachlan scored 135 known goals for the club, more than any other player. The club reached the Scottish Cup quarter-finals in 1888–89 and 1890–91, losing to Celtic and Hearts respectively. In the 1888–89 tournament, it recorded its highest wins: 10–1 against Stenhousemuir and 11–2 against Vale of Bannock. Four East Stirlingshire players earned international caps during this period: Humphrey Jones (Wales captain), David Alexander, Archibald Ritchie, and James McKee (all for Scotland).
Grounds
East Stirlingshire has played at several grounds. As Britannia, one of its first known matches was at Burnhouse, a site thought to later become Merchiston Park, where the club played many late-19th-century matches; some home games were also at Randyford Park. Merchiston Park, located in Bainsford about 1 mile north of Falkirk on the northern bank of the Forth and Clyde Canal, hosted the club's first Scottish Football League match in 1900–01, a 3–2 defeat to Airdrieonians.
It remained the home until 1921, when a nearby iron works acquired the ground for expansion. The club then moved to Firs Park, named after Firs Street in central Falkirk. In 1921, the record attendance of 12,000 was set at a Scottish Cup match against Partick Thistle. Firs Park was the home for 87 years, except for the 1964 season when the club played at Kilbowie Park in Clydebank after a controversial merger with Clydebank Juniors; after one season the merger was disbanded and the club returned.
The club closed Firs Park at the end of the 2007–08 season due to prohibitive refurbishing costs to meet SFA criteria; at closure, the capacity was 1,800 with 200 seats. From 2008, East Stirlingshire ground-shared at Ochilview Park with Stenhousemuir, originally for five years while planning a new Falkirk stadium. In 2018 they moved to Falkirk Stadium, returning to Ochilview for the 2025–26 season.
Notable players
Gordon Russell holds the record for most Scottish Football League appearances for East Stirlingshire with 415 between 1983 and 2002; he also managed the club briefly in 2002. Four players have earned full international caps while with the club, totalling nine caps. Humphrey Jones, who captained Wales four times in his five caps, made his debut against England in 1889. Archibald Ritchie earned his only Scotland cap in March 1891 against Wales, captained by Jones. David Alexander made two Scotland appearances, scoring against Wales in the 1894 British Home Championship. James McKee scored twice in his only Scotland appearance, a 5–2 win over Wales in 1898, and is the last East Stirlingshire player capped. Murray Brown was a defender who performed to a high standard at West Bromwich Albion during his teenage years.

Their heaviest league defeat was a 12-1 loss to Dundee United in April 1936, also in Division Two. In the Scottish Cup, the club's largest margin of victory is nine goals, achieved twice in the 1888-89 tournament: a 10-1 win over Stenhousemuir followed by an 11-2 victory against Vale of Bannock. Their worst cup defeat was a 10-2 loss to Renton in October 1884.
The highest home attendance was 12,000 for a Scottish Cup third-round tie against Partick Thistle at Firs Park on 19 February 1921. Gordon Russell made the most league appearances for the club, featuring in 445 first-team matches from 1983-84 to 2000-01. Andy Rodgers holds the single-season league goals record with 41 in the 2016-17 Lowland Football League. Humphrey Jones earned the most international caps while with the club, playing five times for Wales between 1889 and 1890.
The largest transfer fee received was £35,000 from Chelsea for Jim Docherty in 1978. The most the club has paid was a compensation development fee to Spartans for Jamie Dishington, which surpassed the previous record of £6,000 for Colin McKinnon from Falkirk in 1991.
