Club history
Hamilton Academical was formed in late 1874 by the rector and pupils of Hamilton Academy. The club joined the Scottish Football Association and initially competed in the Scottish Cup and Qualifying Cup before entering the Scottish Football League in November 1897 after Renton resigned. The club has reached the Scottish Cup final twice. The first, in 1911, ended in a goalless draw against Celtic at Ibrox Park; the replay, also at Ibrox, drew 45,000 spectators and resulted in a 2–0 defeat.
The 1935 final saw a Bertie Harrison goal—the club's only goal in a major final—but Rangers won with two goals from Jimmy Smith before over 87,000 spectators. In the 1970s Hamilton briefly resigned from the league due to mounting debts. In 1994 the club sold Douglas Park to Sainsbury's and ground-shared in Coatbridge and Glasgow for seven years. During that period financial hardships led to unpaid players striking, and the club failed to fulfil a fixture in 1999–2000, resulting in a 15-point deduction and relegation to the Third Division.
The club moved into New Douglas Park in 2001. In 2008 Accies gained promotion to the Scottish Premier League for the first time in 20 years. A 3–0 win over Kilmarnock on 17 April 2010 secured a third consecutive top-flight season. Relegation came in 2010–11 after a 1–0 loss at St Johnstone.
The club's top-flight spell was notable for developing youth players James McCarthy and James McArthur, who later played for Wigan Athletic in the Premier League and earned international recognition.
Stadium
New Douglas Park replaced Douglas Park, Hamilton's home from 1888 to 1994. Douglas Park opened on 30 May 1888 with a match against Glasgow University and was sold to Sainsbury's in 1994, with proceeds funding the new stadium on an adjacent site. From 1994 to 2001 the club ground-shared at Cliftonhill and Firhill. From 2022 to 2025 New Douglas Park was shared with Clyde after their eviction from Broadwood. In May 2025 a dispute with the owner led Hamilton to play home fixtures at Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld until further notice. An agreement was reached for Hamilton to return to New Douglas Park from the 2026–27 season.
